We are only a day and a half into a Biden Administration and with the Executive Orders and Proclamations that were signed we can already see the stark contrast with the Trump Administration. President Trump campaigned on and governed by promoting national sovereignty. Everyone knows his slogan “Make America Great Again”, this was not an indictment on America as much as it was on the way that the Obama Administration sacrificed our national sovereignty to international organizations and instituted policies that put America at a disadvantage on the world stage.
While protectionist policies are harmful to free market advocates like myself, policies that put America on equal footing with other world powers are not. With President Biden’s Executive Orders and Proclamations on day one, we have taken a step backward regarding our national sovereignty. If you dig into the Executive Orders and Proclamations, the only significant thing that happened was the rollback of what President Trump had put in place. Below is the list of what I view are the most important changes that were made regarding our national sovereignty.
Rejoining the Paris Accord
This Executive Order recommitted the United States to the Paris Accord which is a legally binding international treaty on climate change. The main purpose of this treaty is to force countries to agree to reduce carbon emissions to combat climate change. Regardless of your view on climate change this treaty does have implications to the sovereignty of the United States. The treaty sets targets that can only be achieved by restructuring our economy. To meet these goals the United States would have to reduce our dependence of fossil fuels, which is the main driver of energy production and transportation in our country.
Most people would support an economy that was a little greener, where all our needs could be met without having to burn fossil fuels. However, the question is what are we willing to sacrifice for it? Are we willing to prematurely alter our economy before the necessary innovation is in place to efficiently transition with minimal sacrifice from the economy? As of right now the technology is not there for this, hopefully in the future it is but to commit the United States to a treaty that legally binds us regardless of our readiness is irresponsible.
Revoking the Keystone Pipeline Permit
By revoking the Keystone Pipeline Permit the Biden Administration has dealt a blow to the energy independence that the Trump Administration had secured. Along with that, by revoking the permit thousands of high paying jobs have been eliminated in an already struggling economy. One of the keys to any economic recovery is cheap energy, by revoking this permit not only does it put our energy independence under threat it also will reduce future supply in the market which will drive up prices and suck much needed discretionary income out of the economy which is needed for a recovery.
This decision could also potentially make us more reliant on oil producing countries that are no friend of the United States. With most of the world’s oil being produced by countries that the United States at best has a lukewarm relationship with and at worst are outright enemies, it puts them in control of the volume and price of the oil that we consume. This Executive Order is nothing more than pandering to the radical environmental base and while they have got their wishes, it is at the expense of our economy and our national security.
Ending the Travel Ban
The racist travel ban, also called the Muslim ban, has been revoked by this Proclamation. Even with the naming of the Proclamation, Proclamation on Ending Discriminatory Bans on Entry to the United States it continues to spread disinformation on what this ban really was. If you read the revoked Proclamations 9645 and 9983 instituted by the Trump Administration, it is hard for an honest person to perceive this as racist or a Muslim Ban.
For starters eight of the top ten countries with the largest Muslim populations in the world are not on the list. If it were really the intention of President Trump to institute a Muslim ban one would think that he would include more countries that fall inside that top ten. I will concede that a majority of the countries on that list are majority Muslim countries, however if you look at which countries are on the list, a different picture is painted. Countries like Iran, Yemen and Syria are hotbeds of extremism with little or no motivation from their governments to share information on people that are seeking entry into the United States. Without the assurances that there are systems in place to vet people seeking entry it would be irresponsible based on national security concerns to allow people from those countries to enter.
When you dig into Proclamation 9645 and 9983 it also is not an outright ban on people entering the country. Except for countries that are outright hostile to the United States (Yemen, Venezuela, Syria, North Korea, Libya, and Iran) citizens from every other country on the list can file for Non-Immigrant Visas which essentially allows temporary entry into the country for things such as vacation and business travel. The fact that the Biden Administration includes the word discriminatory in the title of the Proclamation is dishonest. I can only surmise that they have done this to intentionally mislead people who have not taken the time to read all the wording in President Trump’s Proclamation which would clearly show it was anything but discriminatory.
Day One
Day one was not a good start for those of us that value the United States and our national sovereignty. I have only highlighted three of the Executive Orders or Proclamations that were issued on the first day of the Biden Administration and I will go into more depth on the others in the days to come. President Trump with all his flaws, always did what he thought best for America, on day one we have seen that the Biden Administration has more interest in the optics to the rest of the world than he does implementing policies that put America first. It is going to be a long four years, but we will keep up the fight and I have a feeling that it has only begun regarding what harm could come with future policies. Through all of this remember that America is a great nation that is worth fighting for and never give up in the battle of ideas.
